Turn Your Ring Into a Necklace
I reimagine a ring you no longer wear into a pendant or necklace you'll reach for — using your own diamond, stones, and gold.
What to Do With Your Wedding Rings After Your Spouse or Partner Dies
You're here because someone you built a life with is gone — and the rings are still here. Maybe yours is still on your finger. Maybe theirs is in a drawer you open more often than you tell anyone. Before anything else, I want to say the thing that matters most: you don't have to do anything with them. Not this month, not this year, not ever.
I'm Stacey. I make jewelry in San Francisco, and for more than twenty years women have brought me these rings — some a few months after the loss, many after years. Sometimes we make something new from them. Sometimes saying the options out loud is enough for now. Both are welcome at my bench.
Do I have to decide anything right now?
No. Nothing about the rings is urgent. Wear yours as long as you want — for months, for years, forever. Keep theirs in the drawer, or on a chain, or in your pocket. Widows are sometimes told there's a timeline — when to take the ring off, when to "move on." There is no timeline. The rings will wait for you, and so will I.
How long can I keep wearing my wedding ring after my spouse dies?
As long as you want — months, years, always. There's no etiquette clock, and many widows wear their ring for the rest of their lives. Some move it to the right hand when that starts to feel right. Some wear it on a chain. Some take it off early — not because the love ended, but because the ring said "wife" and the word changed. Women do every one of these, every day — and every one of them is right.
And if what you feel when you look at the rings is complicated — love and grief and even relief, all at once — that's allowed here too. The same ring can comfort you one morning and undo you the next. Both are normal, and neither means anything is wrong with you.
What can I do with my husband's or wife's ring?
There's no single right way to repurpose a wedding ring after a death — but these are the paths chosen most often at my bench, each one a piece of jewelry made from your husband's or wife's ring:
- Wear it as a necklace — the most beloved choice in my studio. A band worn near your heart, every day, without explanation. Sometimes exactly as it is on a beautiful chain; sometimes redesigned into a pendant that holds the metal and the memory in a new form.
- Resize it and wear it — I can resize a partner's band to fit your finger, keeping it exactly as it was.
- Recast it — their gold, melted and reborn as a piece made for you: a ring you'll wear daily, a pendant, a cuff. The metal that lived on their hand stays with you — this is how using your own gold works.
Can our two rings become one piece?
Yes — and when a widow asks me for this, it's usually the piece that means the most. Two bands intertwined into one ring or pendant. Their gold and your gold melted together into a single new band. Your diamond reset with their metal wrapped around it. Two rings that were never apart in life, made inseparable in one piece of jewelry. This is the heart of what I do.
What if I want to pass the rings on someday?
Some widows keep the rings whole for their children — a beautiful choice. Others split what's there: a diamond becomes a pendant for a daughter, the band becomes rings for two sons. If the rings should become heirloom pieces for your family, I can design around exactly that.
How does this work — and can it be done gently?
Gently is the only way I work. It starts with a free consultation — online, from your home, whenever you're ready. You show me the rings and tell me as much or as little of the story as you want. I'll sketch what they could become and give you a transparent quote before anything begins. If you send me the rings, they travel fully insured and tracked, and they are handled in my studio by exactly one person: me. And if the consultation ends with you deciding to change nothing — that's a good outcome too.
