Reset a Diamond Ring

Love your diamond but not the setting? Resetting lets you keep the stones that matter and put them into a design that feels like you today. I reset diamonds and gemstones from worn, dated, damaged, or inherited rings into new settings made to be worn every day, and because your center stone is already yours, it's usually the most affordable way to end up with something that feels brand new.

WHAT DOES RESETTING A RING ACTUALLY MEAN?

Resetting means keeping your stones and replacing everything around them. Your diamond comes out of its current mounting, and I design and build a new setting for it, a new ring, or something else entirely. The stone that carries the meaning stays exactly the same. The metal, the shape, the style, and the way it sits on your hand all change.

You'll hear it called a few different things, resetting, ring resetting, jewelry resetting, or having a stone reset. They all describe the same work, and it's one of the most requested projects that comes through my studio.

WHY WOULD I RESET MY DIAMOND?

• Your setting is dated, damaged, thin, or worn down from years of wear.
• You inherited a ring and want to wear it your way, not the way it was.
• You love the stone but the style no longer feels like you.
• You want a bigger, brighter, or more secure look without buying a new diamond.
• You'd like to combine stones from several pieces into one you'll actually reach for.
• Something happened, a marriage, a divorce, a loss, and the piece needs to mean something different now.

WHAT CAN I RESET?

Engagement rings, wedding bands, heirloom and inherited rings, earrings, pendants, loose diamonds, and colored gemstones. Round, princess, marquise, emerald, oval, pear, old mine and old European cuts, I work with all of them, including stones that are chipped, unusual, or no longer made in that shape.

If you have the stones, I'll design the setting around them. And if you have old gold or platinum, sitting in a drawer, or the settings I'm removing your stones from, I can refine it and apply its value toward the new piece.

CAN YOU RESET MY DIAMONDS INTO A COMPLETELY NEW RING?

Yes, and this is where it gets fun. A classic solitaire can become a sculptural band. Scattered stones from three inherited pieces can become one statement ring. A diamond from a ring you no longer want to wear on that finger can become a pendant instead.

We'll work through style, stones, metals, shape, and scale together until we land on something that feels exactly right. You approve the design before anything is made.

WILL MY STONE BE SAFE?

This is the question I'm asked most, and it's the right one to ask. Removing a stone from an old setting takes patience, prongs get brittle over decades, and stones that have been in place for fifty years sometimes have wear you can't see until they're out.

I examine every stone once it's unset and tell you honestly what I find, including anything I'd want to address before it goes into a new piece. Your jewelry is documented at every step, and everything ships fully insured and tracked in both directions.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO RESET A DIAMOND?

Resetting is one of the most affordable redesigns, because the most expensive part of a ring, your center stone, is already yours. You're mainly paying for the new setting, the metal, and the setting work.

What helps most is having a comfortable ballpark budget in mind. My job is to work backward from that budget as much as possible, and there are usually several creative ways to get the look you want within the range that feels right to you. HOW DOES RESETTING WORK?

1. A free virtual consultation. We talk through your piece, your story, and what you'd love to wear, no pressure, no obligation.
2. You send photos. A few clear pictures of your ring or stones, plus any inspiration images of jewelry you love.
3. I design the new setting around your stones, your style, and your budget, and you approve every detail.
4. I unset your stones and build the new piece in my studio, refining any old gold you've sent along.
5. Your finished piece arrives, shipped insured and tracked, ready to wear.

The whole thing can be done remotely. Most of my clients aren't anywhere near San Francisco.

RESET, REDESIGN, OR RESIZE, WHICH DO YOU ACTUALLY NEED?

These get used interchangeably, and they're genuinely different projects at very different prices:
