It's meaningful, environmentally friendly, and often a very cost-effective way to create something new that feels deeply personal — because the most valuable parts, your stones and your gold, are already yours. Here's an honest look at what shapes the cost of a redesign, and how I price each piece.

HOW MUCH DOES JEWELRY REDESIGN COST?

Every redesign is one of a kind, so there's no flat price — it depends on the design, the materials, and the work involved. Because you supply your own gems and gold, you usually save a meaningful amount compared with buying a brand-new piece.

What helps most is having a comfortable ballpark budget in mind. My job is to work backward from that budget as much as possible — there are often many creative ways to tailor a design so it achieves the look you want while staying within the price range that feels comfortable to you. After a free consultation I give you a clear, itemized quote before any work begins, so there are never surprises.

WHAT AFFECTS THE COST OF A REDESIGN?

1. Design complexity.  A simple resetting costs less than an intricate, fully custom piece.
2. Metal.  How much new gold or platinum is needed beyond what you supply, at current market prices.
3. Stones. Whether we reuse your own diamonds and gemstones (most affordable) or source new ones.
4. Setting & labor. The number of stones and the setting style.
5. Finishing. Engraving, textures, or special finishes.

DOES USING MY OWN GOLD AND STONES MAKE IT CHEAPER?

Yes — and I absolutely love working with clients' gemstones. Reusing family stones is not only sentimental but also more sustainable than mining new gems, and it means you aren't paying for new stones — often the single biggest cost in fine jewelry.

WHY I REFINE YOUR OLD GOLD INSTEAD OF MELTING IT DOWN DIRECTLY

While I love incorporating materials that carry personal history, I generally recommend refining old metals rather than reusing them directly for casting. Over the years, jewelry accumulates solder, repairs, and unknown alloys that can create porosity, pitting, or other imperfections in a new casting — and the more times a metal has been melted and recast, the greater that risk becomes. Casting also requires more metal than most people expect, because additional gold is needed to feed the casting process itself.

Instead, I refine your old metal and apply the settlement value as a credit toward your new piece — while casting the piece in freshly refined metal for the best possible result. You can include small items like broken chains, earring backs, and other odds and ends to maximize the value you receive.

And depending on how much gold or platinum you have, it's entirely possible that the refining value could exceed the cost of the new piece. In that case, you'd receive both your new jewelry and a check for the remaining balance. I don't take any percentage of the refining payout — the full value belongs to you, applied to the project or returned directly.
